He-Man, Skeletor, & King Randor - Mattel - 1982 & 1987
Among the first figures produced with the idea of a cartoon-as-toy-advertisement concept, He-Man & the Masters of the Universe enjoyed a meteoric rise followed by a massive collapse within a few short years. The original figures were not complicated with limited articulation, relatively similar sculpts, and simple good-vs-evil storylines. Knockoff and imitation toylines from groups like Remco tended to last a little longer than Mattel's line, but the original He-man, which also had several well-done revivals, remains a lasting memory for boys of the 1980s.
King Randor was a late release in the line in 1987, and remains one of the more rare figures with a higher price tag.
The Breakdown:
He-Man Loose: Any condition with or without accessories, but incomplete.
He-Man Loose Complete: Figure with all accessories, may or may not have comic.
King Randor Loose: Any condition with or without some accessories.
King Randor Loose Complete: Figure with all accessories.
My take: Most He-man figures, particularly of the first and second wave, are fairly common in decent condition with accessories...except He-Man. A complete He-Man is a bit rare, and even one without accessories brings a bit higher tag than expected. The villains in particular are all over the place on ebay. A couple of high-end sellers also tend to keep the average price of complete He-man figures up, with some sales as high as $70-$75.
Skeletor figures have two typical variants - a full-color boot and a boot where only the front half is painted. Neither bear a significant difference on the value. Fewer Skeletors sell, compared to He-man figures.
Loose completes, after spiking, dropping below completes for the first time. Interesting.
